Do your 401(k) investment choices have your head spinning? Don’t feel alone!
By Michael Simone
Last year my single 35 year old son asked me to help him sort out his 401(k) plan investments. When I looked at them I saw the most bizarre array of choices. My head was spinning, and I’m in this business! It was an investing mess. And because he didn’t know better, having no good guidance, he was in a 2018 Target Date fund… that had a risk profile for someone retiring in 3 years!
In our early lives my wife were always confused about where to put our money in the maze of choices our 401(k) plans offered. Back then I didn’t understand prudent investing in a Globally Diversified Portfolio I had little idea what to do, and really no one to help who understood the power of owning the entire world in such a portfolio.
If you’re in a 401(k) plan and you’re confused about which funds to hold your money, we might be able to help. We realize, of course, your plan does limit your choices but there’s often a possibility to find more diverse investments with lower risk and a higher expected return that other funds within that limited selection. You might be able to get ‘pretty darn’ good given the limited selections in your plan.
We’ll be happy to take a look, examine your life situation and risk tolerance, and make some suggestions to help you rearrange your choices. Send us an email or give us a call for a complimentary ‘401(k) MRI.’
